Happy September! For many people, this month signifies new beginnings and new routines.
If you felt it was hard to keep your healthy habits during the summer, you are not alone! Frequent BBQs, delicious sangrias, summer trips… all test our willpower and can make it challenging to stick to healthy routines.
With that being said, now is a great time to get back on track! Whether it’s exercise, taking your supplements, going to sleep earlier or introducing new dietary changes, if you struggle keeping your health routines, here are a few tips we recommend:
- Set a daily alarm for the first month: this is simple but very effective. In fact, in a recent survey we’ve conducted with some of our most successful patients going through our Hormone Rebalance Program, almost all of them reported that to get in the habit of taking their daily supplements, they initially set alarm reminder. This helped to turn it into a daily routine typically within one month.
- Piggy back on other habits: it may be hard to create a habit from scratch, so instead build on other habits you already have. For example, set your supplements by your toothbrush so you remember to take them in the morning or bedtime. Leave your water jug by your coffee machine so you remember to first start with a tall glass of water. Leave an extra gym bag by your work desk so it’s easier to step out for a quick workout at lunch without too much planning in advance.
- Start with one habit at a time: Rome wasn’t built in a day. Even simple things like drinking 2 extra cups of water per day, doing just one 20 minute walk a week or eliminating carbs from just one meal a day (like breakfast), will add up. Sure, it may not be enough to lose 20lbs in one month, but even a five degree change of course from your usual routine, brings you to a totally new end point with time. Little changes are far more manageable, less scary and make it easier to add more down the road.
- Use habit tracking apps: if you thrive on crossing things off your checklist, this tip is for you! Whether you simply add the habit you are trying to form to your daily to-do list, your calendar or use a fancier app, figure out what works for you depending on what you are trying to achieve. HabitBull is one of our favourites to monitor goals across multiple disciplines, or MyFitnessPal if your goals are more focused on diet.
Hopefully we’ve provided you with a few tools and tips on how to get started and restore some of your healthy habits. With that being said, you don’t have to it this alone!
